What to Consider When Buying a Bed Frame & Headboard

There are two common support options for bed frames: platforms and box springs. Platform beds sit lower on the ground, and they have built in support for your mattress. Box springs are fabric-covered frames that lay between the mattress and bed frame to give your mattress support.

Frame Type

There are different types of bed frames on the market. One option is a freestanding bed frame that does not include a headboard or any other decorative elements. Another option is a complete bed frame that comes with all the bells and whistles (headboard, footboard, side rails, etc). Bed frames range from simple to complete to anywhere in between.

Materials

Wood and metal are the two most common bed frame materials. While they differ in appearance, both materials provide a sturdy bed frame option. Metal bed frames require less maintenance, they are more durable, lighter weight, and easier to adjust. Wooden bed frames are thicker, sturdier, and tend to be more stable. These frames are easier to assemble and are more customizable. You also need to consider if you want your bed frame and headboard upholstered or non-upholstered. Upholstered frames and headboards are stylish and give your room a more cohesive look.

Size & Measurements

It is important that you determine the right size bed frame and headboard and measure your space correctly. If you love your current mattress and are just looking to upgrade your bed frame, use your mattress as a size guide, while keeping your bedroom size in consideration. Ideally, you should have 2 to 3 feet around your bed on each side to give you enough space to move around. Measure your space and compare it to standard bed frame dimensions to find the right size for you.

If you are going to go the route of having a headboard, there are two ways you can go. One, you can match your headboard to your bed frame to create a cohesive look.
