OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Certified Mattresses
If you’re looking for a new mattress, it is important to consider the materials the mattress is made of and how safe it is to sleep on. The OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 label is one of the most recognized labels for textiles that have been tested for harmful substances. Products that hold this certification meet the strictest standards of safety and all textile products, including mattresses, are suitable for certification. All BedInABox® mattresses hold the STANDARD 100 label, meaning they are safe to sleep on and manufactured in a responsible way.
About the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Label
So what exactly does this certification mean, and why should you pay attention to it? According to the OEKO-TEX® website, this means that every component of the certified product – from our memory foam to the zippers on our mattress covers – has been tested for harmful substances. Keep reading to learn more about the STANDARD 100 label, the certification process and the health and safety benefits that come with it.
Independently Tested and Certified
Seventeen independent research and test institutes in Europe and Japan are responsible for conducting tests on all textile and leather products to determine if they meet the strict requirements for the STANDARD 100 label that are set forth by the OEKO-TEX® criteria catalog. These institutes also work to develop new and improved test methods and define limit values for the textile and leather industry. Often, limit values for the OEKO-TEX® certification go beyond national and international requirements, and tests take into account both regulated and non-regulated substances which may be unsafe for humans.
To keep their testing and certification process up to the highest standards, OEKO-TEX® updates their criteria catalog at least once a year. Each component is tested for over 1,000 harmful substances that fall within very strict limit values. In order for products to continue holding the STANDARD 100 label, every component must be retested for harmful substances and approved to be safe for human health every year to ensure they meet any updates within the criteria catalog.
How to Know If Your Mattress Is Certified
Mattresses with the STANDARD 100 label will usually come with a tag clearly stating the OEKO-TEX® certification and label. This label indicates that every component of the mattress has been tested for harmful substances and proven safe for human health. For BedInABox® mattresses in particular, all components of our mattresses have been tested and certified, including the memory foam and mattress cover. Our memory foam is considered a Class I product, which means it must meet the strictest requirements and limit values out of all four product classes that are certified with the STANDARD 100 label. Other Class I products include baby and toddler products. Our mattress cover is considered a Class II product that comes into direct contact with skin and must meet a different set of safety criteria in order to maintain the STANDARD 100 label.
