How Big is a Twin Size Mattress?

Twin Mattress Size

Mattress size matters, and a twin size mattress in a box is ideal for kids or individuals who do not require much space to sleep comfortably. Twin size mattresses are the smallest mattress size on the market, outside of crib and toddler mattresses, measuring 38” wide by 75” long. While adults or anyone sleeping with a partner may find a twin mattress a little too cozy, they are perfect for growing children or teens who generally don’t require as much sleeping space. Twin size beds are also ideal for bunk beds or smaller rooms that require two separate beds for children or guests. They share the same length as full size mattresses, but measure 15 inches shorter in width, making them relatively lightweight and easy to move, too. Because of their lighter weight and affordability, twin size mattresses can be quite versatile in maximizing smaller sleeping spaces.

Room & Budget Requirements

If you are stuck deciding between a twin size mattress or something larger, it is important to consider your bedroom size and your budget. Because twin mattresses are smaller than the larger full size or queen size alternatives, they tend to be more affordable and more compatible with smaller bedroom spaces. We recommend that your room measure at least 70 square feet to comfortably accommodate a twin bed, a dresser and still have adequate walking space. The average American bedroom size ranges between 120 to 132 square feet, which would leave ample room for additional furniture and living space if you go with a twin size mattress in a box. Twin size mattresses are very compatible with dorm rooms, small city apartments, lofts or studios, guest rooms, and children's bedrooms

How to Maximize Bedroom Space with a Twin Mattress

A twin mattress is really a great option for any bedroom. Because of the accommodating size, twin mattresses make maximizing your bedroom space fairly easy. Below are some of the most common bedroom configurations and how you can maximize your space in each with a twin mattress.

Square Bedrooms

It is easiest to maximize space in a square bedroom. In a square bedroom, you can essentially place your twin mattress wherever you like, and you should still have plenty of extra room for other bedroom furniture. If you do choose to place your bed in a corner of the room, make sure that you are still easily able to make the bed.

Rectangular Bedrooms

As one of the narrowest mattresses on the market, twin mattresses work well in rectangular bedrooms, too. To maximize space in a rectangular bedroom, we suggest placing your twin size bed on one side of the room and your other bedroom furnishings on the other side. Since rectangular bedrooms are narrow, you may prefer to place your twin bed in the center of the longest wall, as opposed to a corner.

L-Shaped Bedrooms

Twin mattresses should fit well in L-shaped bedrooms because of their convenient size. With any mattress, the best way to maximize space in an L-Shaped bedroom is to put your bed in one area and your furniture in the other. We always suggest placing your twin mattress in the smaller section of the L, and using the larger section for bedroom living space.

Uniquely-Shaped Bedrooms

Twin mattresses are perfect for uniquely-shaped bedrooms, as they are the most accommodating mattress size. Maximize space in your uniquely-shaped bedroom by placing your mattress where it is not blocking any outlets, windows, closets, or doors. Maximizing wall space and being creative with your storage solutions are also great ways to maximize space in a uniquely-shaped bedroom.

Recommended Accessories

When planning on purchasing a new mattress, especially if you do not currently have a twin size bed, be sure to leave room in your budget for basic sleep accessories such as mattress protectors, sheets, and other essential bedding. You may also need a new base or mattress foundation to properly support your new mattress. We also suggest pairing your mattress with a high-quality sheet set or a BedInABox® mattress protector to help prolong the life of your mattress. A mattress protector is a simple solution to maintain the quality and longevity of your mattress by protecting it from spills, accidents and daily wear and tear. Twin size bedding and accessories are widely available, most of what you need also being available on our website, BedInABox.com.

Does BedInABox® Sell A Twin Size Mattress

Yes, five of our six mattress models are available in twin sizes! Whether you prefer the medium-firm comfort and support of our Original mattress, or the advanced memory foam and spring support of our Dual Hybrid™ mattress, we have options for every sleep preference. The only BedInABox® mattress model that we do not currently offer in a twin size is the Eco-Lux® mattress, but it is available in twin XL size to offer the additional length of a twin XL for one of our most premium mattresses.

Is The Twin Size Big Enough?

While twin size mattresses may not be ideal for adults or couples sharing a bed, the 38 inch mattress width is a great option for growing children or teens and single sleepers on tight budgets. A twin XL mattress size is also a great, affordable option for anyone looking at a twin size but would prefer to have a little more length than a traditional twin size mattress. A twin XL mattress measures 38” wide by 80” long, which provides an additional 5 inches of length than a traditional twin. The twin XL is actually the most common mattress size in college dorm rooms, so while the extra length may not seem like much, the twin XL proves perfect for taller singles or children who are growing quickly. A twin XL mattress will also fit into a small room with as much comfort and ease as a twin size. Even better, all BedInABox® mattress models are available in the twin XL mattress size.

Twin & Twin XL Sizes Are Both Good Options

When deciding which mattress size is right for you, remember to measure your bedroom space, consider your sleep preferences and plan accordingly. Twin and twin XL mattresses are affordable, lightweight, and versatile, which makes them compatible with many different sleep spaces and sleep needs. Every BedInABox® mattress is also compressed and roll-packed into a movable box, making the transition to a new mattress in a small space even easier.
